The long-awaited pedestrian crossings are installed on the busy parts of Privokzalnyi-Sadikov and Anoshin streets, in the border areas of Shark village of Kara-Suu district and Osh city.
This initiative was implemented as a result of joint efforts of the ‘Gulbakhar’, ‘Akniet’, ‘Navbakhor’ SHGs and children's SHGs ‘Barsbek’, ‘Shirin’, organized within the framework of the WPU Erayim’s ‘The Introduction of a combination of Traditional and Modern Approaches to Prevent Conflict in the South of Kyrgyzstan’ project, supported by the German Bread for the World (Brot für die Welt) international organization.
It should be noted that the initiative to install pedestrian crossings was raised in Autumn 2017 by the members of the above self-help groups. Armed with the knowledge gained in the trainings organized within the framework of the Erayim’s project on the topic ‘Advocacy and Lobbying’, the SHG members addressed a letter to the Osh City Interior Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic in order to prevent road accidents. As a result, road signs and pedestrian crossings were established on dangerous parts of roads.
"Before, in order to establish pedestrian crossings on the roads to prevent road accidents, we made a lot of efforts, but to no avail, we are very grateful for the help in realizing our ideas to self-help groups, organized by WPU Erayim. Now our children can safely cross roads on busy streets," the head of the village, Abduvahap Dadazhanov, added.
