Within the framework of WPU Erayim’s project ‘The introduction of a combination of traditional and modern approaches to prevent conflict in the south of Kyrgyzstan’, a contest called ‘A wise mother-in-law and an exemplary daughter-in-law’ was held among self-help groups (SHG) in Shark, Mady and Kyzyl-Kyshtak rural districts of Kara-Suu Region in Osh Province.

The aim of this event was to demonstrate the improvements in women’s role in society and the enthusiastic growth of the SHGs. Furthermore, the event aimed to show the role that women play in peace-making and raised awareness of what is need to reach a leadership level. The event also raised awareness of the struggle against domestic violence and bride kidnapping, as well as the problems around adolescent pregnancy and the importance of tolerance between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.

"The purpose of this event is to raise and strengthen good traditions, get rid of traditions that negatively influence society, improve relations between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, and provide a contemporary education to daughters-in-law so they could find their place in the society and find their desired job," said Azad Apishova, a SHG member. The participants of the contest completed several tasks showcasing their abilities and talents. A festive dastarkon was prepared and concert programs were organized.
