Celebrating Nooruz at school
12.04.2016 18:13
Students from Abu Ali Ibn Sina secondary school and employees of the womens’ public union Erayim came together recently to celebrate the spring festival Nooruz. Abu Ali Ibn Sina secondary school is situated in the village of Kok-Tash, in the Shark village district (Kara-Suu region, Osh province).
Kok-Tash is home to people of different ethnicities, who live together as one big, friendly family. Most of the villagers work in agriculture; children from the village are taught from an early age how to cultivate the land, and they have first-hand experience of rural farm work. At the Nooruz festival, children cooked traditional dishes from a variety of ethnic backgrounds using vegetables that they had grown in their own gardens. Guests at the event were treated to the children’s food, as well as the recipes for the dishes on offer. Later, children performed traditional dances and songs, and traditional games were played.
The festival also involved the children’s and adults’ self-help groups that had been formed as part of the project ‘The introduction of a combination of traditional and modern approaches to prevent conflict in the south of Kyrgyzstan.’ Members of the self-help groups prepared traditional regional dishes and performed dances and songs from a variety of different ethnic cultures.
Prizes were awarded for outstanding contributions to the success of the event.
