Accident Prevention is also Public Cause

The road connecting Kaiyrma and Kosh-Korgon villages within the Akman municipality of the Bazar-Korgon district crosses the Osh-Bishkek highway. Highway traffic is very dangerous on this section of the road because there are no road signs, which creates an opportunity for hotshots to increase speed on the flat, newly reconstructed asphalt road.
There are no speed limit signs either. Due to this, there has been an increase in accidents, and fatalities. In addition, since the road was recently built, the uneven laying of the asphalt in comparison to the village roads makes it more difficult for vehicles from the two villages to enter the highway. Adjacent roads need to be leveled with the highway. ‘Asylzat’ ASHG Akman municipality has repeatedly applied to local authorities, but to no avail. They wrote a letter to the Bazar-Korgon district administration too. An open-air meeting was held with local residents in the Kosh-Korgon village. District administration head-akim, the head of the municipality, deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh, representatives of the Traffic Safety Department, and of the regional department of internal affairs all took part in the meeting. As a result of the considerable efforts of the ASHG, the roads from the villages adjacent to the highway were leveled with gravel and sand.
It should be noted that the meeting was organized by self-help groups(SHGs) formed by Women's Public Union ‘Erayim’ under the project ‘The Introduction of a Combination of Modern and Traditional Approaches to Prevent the Conflict in the South of Kyrgyzstan’. ASHG ‘Asylzat’ and other SHGs in Akman municipality are solving some local problems through the principles of motivation and lobbying. SHGs motivate residents to solve local issues and lobby their interests in local governments.
