Beekeeping Business of the Association of SHG Kurmanzhan Datka

To ensure the financial sustainability, SHG Associations has been started income-generating activities within the framework of the WPU Erayim’s ‘The Introduction of a Combination of Traditional and Modern Approaches to Prevent Conflict in the South of Kyrgyzstan’ project, supported by the German international organization Bread for the World (Brot für die Welt). One of the types of such activities is the beekeeping business of the SHG Association Kurmanzhan Datka in Mady rural district of Kara-Suu district in Osh oblast.
Before starting a beekeeping business, members of the Ak Niet, Tumar and Datkaiym SHGs, which are members of the Kurmanzhan-Datka SHG Association, participated in a special training organized by volunteers of the Enactus organization, where they could learn the secrets of beekeeping. To organize entrepreneurial activities in beekeeping, they developed a business plan and raised funds for 90,000 KGS from the savings of SHGs, 129,000 KGS from the entrepreneurs’ contribution, 100,000 KGS were taken on credit from the Erayim Bereke microcredit agency. On the collected 319,000 KGS, 50 hives, bees, beekeeping equipment, medicines were purchased and the beekeeping business was launched. As a result of this income-generating activity, 240 kg of honey was collected from 50 hives and have been sold at 330 KGS per 1 kg, which in the first-year earn from business amounted to 79,200 KGS.
“Our first meeting with the volunteers of the Enactus organization took place after the event organized by the initiative of the ‘Roza Otunbayeva Initiative’ International Public Foundation in Osh. Enactus organization as a partner of the WPU Erayim to date provides support to entrepreneurs among SHGs in the form of training and consultation on the secrets of beekeeping. We are just starting to master this type of entrepreneurial activity and we will not stop here. We plan to double the production,” - concluded Sanjyra Pusurova, a member of the SHG Ak Niet.
