The 3rd phase of the ‘Introduction of a Combination of Traditional and Modern Approaches to Prevent Conflict in the South of Kyrgyzstan’ project has started its activity

WPU Erayim’s ‘The Introduction of a Combination of Traditional and Modern Approaches to Prevent Conflict in the South of Kyrgyzstan’ project, supported by the German international organization Bread for the World (Brot für die Welt), which begun in 2014, has received additional support for further 3 years.
A new phase of the project has received support for the period from June 2019 to July 2022. It should be noted, that the second phase of the project had been implemented during the 2,5 years period from January 2017 to June 2019 in Shark, Mady, Kyzyl-Kyshtak rural districts of Kara-Suu district in Osh province and Bazar-Korgon and Akman rural districts of Bazar-Korgon district, as well as in Chyngyz Aitmatov municipal territorial unit of Jalal-Abad city in Jalal-Abad province.
“There have been some changes in the third phase of the project. In particular, the Forum Theatre, Leadership and Russian Language clubs, which has been worked in the previous phase stopped their activities. As an innovation of the project, the Mediation method was included in the project components as an effective method of solving conflicts and disputes out of courts protecting the interests of each side. In this direction, it is planned to prepare family and community mediators out of SHG members, who will help local citizens to solve conflicts and disputes out of courts protecting the interests of each side. This, in turn, can greatly contribute to peace, inter-ethnic friendship, strengthening family relations in the project area,” – says Rakhila Zhusupova, the Chairperson of WPU Erayim.
The new phase of the project includes the following three components:
- Strengthening SHG Associations,
- Provision of Psychological, Legal Aid, Mediation Support;
- Strengthening of Maternal Schools.
The following residents of various ethnicities living in Mady, Shark, Kyzyl-Kyshtak in Osh province and Bazar-Korgon, Akman rural districts, Ch. Aitmatov municipal territorial unit of the Jalal-Abad city in Jalal-Abad province of Kyrgyzstan is identified as direct beneficiaries of the project:
- 712 members of 80 adult SHGs (sex: 90% female, 10% male; ethnicity: 67% kyrgyz, 28% uzbek, 3% turk and 2% other ethnic groups; social status: 65% poor, 5% extremely poor, 30% middle);
- 318 members of 6 SHG Associations (sex: 90% female, 10% male; ethnicity: 65% kyrgyz, 30% uzbek, 3% turk and 2% other ethnic groups; social status: 62% poor, 10% extremely poor, 28% middle);
- 606 members of 60 children SHGs composed of schoolchildren (sex: 58% female, 42% male; ethnicity: 67% kyrgyz, 23% uzbek, 8% turk and 2% other ethnic groups; social status: 60% poor, 10% extremely poor, 30% middle);
- 1661 children attending 40 Maternal Schools (sex: 82% female, 83% male; ethnicity: 60% kyrgyz, 35% uzbek, 3% turk and 2% other ethnic groups; social status: 65 % poor, 3% extremely poor, 32% middle).
Besides, the project has indirect beneficiaries, which consists of the following group of people:
- Families of members of 140 SHGs consisting of adults and school students (about 840 persons);
- 2110 parents of children attending 40 maternal schools;
- 3628 (22%) vulnerable families and 1788 (0,86%) social orphans living in the Mady, Shark, Kyzyl-Kyshtak, Bazar-Korgon, Akman rural districts and Ch. Aitmatov municipal territorial unit of the Jalal-Abad city (out of 196,458 people);
- Executive and legislative bodies of the Mady, Shark, Kyzyl-Kyshtak, Bazar-Korgon, Akman rural districts and Ch. Aitmatov municipal territorial unit of the Jalal-Abad city that is covered by the project;
- 309 teachers and 4841 students of educational institutions located in the project area;
- Residents of the project area (about 196,458 persons).
As the output of the project, SHG Associations sustainably working as civil institutions in the project sites, together with local authorities will contribute to strengthening inter-ethnic unity and social wellbeing among the people with the aim of consolidating friendship and inter-ethnic peace in the project area.
